Textile technology is a program that covers a range of topics from chemistry and physics in textile production to textiles and material composition used in apparel and interior design. Textiles are ubiquitous – clothes, bed sheets, draperies, carpeting, upholstery fabrics, towels and even used as the lining of space shuttle cargo. The program teaches how to create and develop fabrics and other textile material used in manufacturing, apparel, healthcare and consumer products
Textile technology is a branch of engineering where technology is used for developing and creating several varieties of fabric, textiles and garments from yarn. It involves the study of fiber science and students learn how to create and test fibers from both natural and synthetic sources. This branch of engineering involves the study of chemicals and polymers to produce fabric which is durable, safe and economically affordable.  Recent innovations in this fast paced industry include medical clothing and micro-climate apparel.
At the B. Tech level there is an emphasis on design, product and process development activities. In the final year students work on projects besides undergoing practical training in industrial establishments. At an undergraduate level, Bachelor of Science programs are available, and most allow students to choose an area of specialization, such as apparel design, production, marketing, or textile technology. As in other engineering pursuits a student pursuing textile engineering must in addition to a strong foundation in physics, chemistry and maths must have analytical skills, possess problem solving abilities and be a team player.
Students can seek employment in production or quality control, interior design, process engineering, research and development or in senior technical management. Should you specialize in textile chemistry than there is the addition opportunity to join dyeing and finishing, polymer science and environmental controlled companies.
Institutes offering the program include North Carolina State University, University of Nebraska, University of Manchester, Leeds and Dresden University of Technology.
