ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

ABOUT THE ESL PROGRAM

The Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) was established in 1964 as a unit of the Department of Linguistics. CESL’s primary goal is to engage non-native English speakers in an outstanding curriculum in order to prepare them with the academic abilities and language skills essential to succeed at an American university, either at the undergraduate or graduate level. Housed jointly with an additional unit of the Department of Linguistics that offers academic training in TESOL, CESL provides supervised teaching opportunities for graduate students and serves as a focal point for the advancement of teaching and research in the ESL field. CESL is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.

INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM

About the Course

The Intensive English Program offers four 8-week sessions throughout the academic year. Two 6-week sessions are offered during the summer and provide one hour more of instruction per day than the 8-week session. Students enrolled in the Program receive 25-30 hours of classroom, tutoring and Language Media Center instruction per week.

The Program offers 6 levels of English classes, from beginning to advance. A course for graduate students is also available. Graduate Student English (GSE) is open to students who have completed the regular full-time program and are entering graduate school. Upon the student’s arrival at the school, they are required to take the Institutional TOEFL Test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. At the end of each session, students who complete their course of study are awarded a certificate of attendance. Students who successfully complete CESL’s advanced level and pass the proficiency examinations are awarded with English proficiency certification and are certified as having sufficient command of English to study in an American college or university.

The Program’s curriculum begins by focusing on Basic English skills, then proceeds to communication skills, and ends by focusing on English for academic purposes. Students compliment their in-class instruction by making use of the Language Media Center to refine their newly-acquired English language abilities. Elective courses are also available to intermediate and advanced-level students and include topics such as TOEFL preparation, Pronunciation, Discussion. High-intermediate to advanced-level students are permitted to observe regular University classes of their choice.
