Telford College of Arts and Technology (TCAT) are at the forefront of education choices for students in the vocational, academic and English language sectors. The College was established over 100 years ago and has a national reputation in the UK as a grade 1 college, providing excellent education and training, and accredited by OFSTED and the British Council. International students at TCAT benefit from an experienced international support team and courses aimed at preparing them for today’s global challenges.

The college was founded in 1892 by Charles Walker as the Walker Technical College. It was based in Oakengates, Shropshire. Later, it moved to a larger campus on the outskirts of Wellington which became the part of new town of Telford. The old Oakengates site (now closed) in March 2010. In 2006 it received very good grades after an OFSTED inspection.

In 2008 the college celebrated the Queens Anniversary Award with a visit to Buckingham Palace to meet Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Every year the College recruits in excess of 17,000 students Over 10,000 students are taught on employers’ premises every year. The College, with an annual turnover of £27M, is the largest provider of further education in Shropshire. The College’s Sports Academy is in its fifth year, and each year goes from strength to strength working alongside the council and community, and is at the forefront of national best practice


The College is one of a small number nationally to be graded as “Outstanding” in all categories by Ofsted. Overall student success rates at Telford College are 88% which places it as one of the highest performing colleges in the country.

The College is recognized as a Learning and Skills Beacon College. The College has won more national awards for the quality of its provision than any college in the United Kingdom David Sherlock – Chief Inspector of the Adult Learning Inspectorate named Telford College as one of the “best of the best” in his annual report in 2006 2,278 students gained qualifications in basic literacy and numeracy, a success rate of 95%. The College is the only further education college nationwide to have a Super Dome as part of its superb sports facilities. Each year the College holds TCAT Celebrates where we enjoy the successful achievements of students and staff.


The College specializes in providing vocational education. The College is a Centre of Vocational Excellence in Engineering. The College is the largest and most successful provider of training on employer premises in the United Kingdom. Over 200 students annually gain higher level professional qualifications and foundation degrees at the College

Over 1,000 pre-16 learners access the College each year for vocational qualifications.
