Question and Answers: Medical/Engineering Courses in India

Question

My child goes to a school that prepares for ICSE / ISC course but recently the school has decided to switch to the IB scheme.  Most parent – who are from India – are not very familiar with this course content. Pl tell us how well the IB syllabus is suited for students preparing  for competitive entrance  exams for Medical / Engineering courses offered in India.

Answer

The subjects needed for pursuing engineering are Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at the higher level irrespective of where your child intends to study, be it India or the west. The content of the IB course is similar to what is expected by Engineering Colleges in India but your child will need to sit for an entrance examination. All credible and nationally ranked institutions recognize the IB circular. Colleges in the US are not specific about subject choices in high school as compared to the UK or Indian universities.

Medical or Engineering Courses in India

Your child will need all three science subjects, Biology, Chemistry and Physics if planning on studying Medicine in India. In the UK you need minimum two science subjects at A Levels, the third subject could be taken as a science subject or Math’s. As you might be aware in Canada and the US medicine is a postgraduate degree.

To do three sciences for the IB, the school would have to get special permission from the IB board. There are a few IB schools in India that offer the three sciences together. The IB board does allow students to do three sciences and drop another subject.

As IB results are declared later than CBSE you may show colleges the predicted results. Many colleges in Mumbai do accept these as the predicted results tend to be fairly accurate and the student should obtain conditional admissions pending the results. You can also ask your school to request the IB board for a mark sheet showing the results in percentage.

Hope this helps.
