Southeast Missouri State University, is a public, accredited university located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, United States, near the banks of the Mississippi River. The institution, having started as a normal school, has a traditional strength in teacher education. The recent addition of the River Campus, housing the Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts, has increased the university’s commitment to education in the arts. As a comprehensive institution, the institution offers over 200 areas of study, including undergraduate degrees as well as master’s degrees and a cooperative Ed.D. program with the University of Missouri.

The newly constructed River Campus, on the banks of the Mississippi River, is the Midwest’s first public institution with a campus dedicated to the disciplines of art, dance, music and theatre. The River Campus provides state-of- the-art facilities, which include a 950-seat professional theatre.


The Student Aquatic Center is an $8.5 million, 31,922-square-foot facility with the following features:

  • The 2,915-square-foot leisure pool is seven feet at its deepest point
  • The leisure pool features a 40-foot high boulder wall with four waterfalls allowing patrons the thrill of climbing and falling into the seven-foot-deep leisure pool
  • Indoor zip line running 20 to 25 yards across the leisure pool allowing patrons to grab the bar and push themselves out over the water
  • Six-lane, 25-yard, 3,868-square-foot lap pool for competitive swimming
  • A 12-person hot tub
  • Artificial palm trees and vegetation giving the facility a tropical feel

There are a variety of things to do as well, such as rock climbing, hiking, caving and seeing car races.
