The most popular majors at Shawnee State University include: Art/art studies; Business administration and management; Nursing/registered nurse training (R.N., A.S.N., B.S.N., M.S.N.); Psychology; and Sport and fitness administration/management. The average freshman retention rate, an indicator of student satisfaction, is 56.8 percent.
SSU has a low student/faculty ratio of 18:1, and provides more than $1.5 million in scholarships. In the 2008-09 academic years, enrollment reached 4,300 students.
The school offers financial aid for athletes. Of students receiving athletic financial aid, 18 male students received the aid (men were 60% of those receiving aid) and 12 women were awarded financial aid based on athletics (representing 40% of students receiving such aid).
Shawnee State University has a rich tradition of success in athletics. A member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, SSU has participated in 24 National Championships in 6 of 11 sponsored sports. The SSU women’s basketball team won the NAIA Division II National Championship on March 16. SSU also boasts a Men’s Cross Country team that is national ranked nearly every year. The university also fields teams in basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, softball, volleyball, golf, and cross country. Shawnee State University is unique in that all residence halls on campus are apartment-style. New students, who are not living at home, are required to live on campus for at least their first year. Residence halls are staffed with undergraduate student Resident Assistants, supervised by full-time, Master’s-level Hall Directors. The Office of Student Activities and Housing manages the residence halls. There is a full-service, all-you-care-to-eat, dining facility on campus, currently managed by Sodexho Food Services.
Shawnee’s Board of Trustees recently approved a new university master plan a plan for the “university’s growth over the next 20 years”. The plan looks to reshape the campus, including new structures and renovations. An extensive renovation to the University’s Student Center (“University Center”) of $15million is underway.
Shawnee State University has earned an Honorable Mention on the Princeton Review’s second annual list of the best graduate schools in the US and Canada to study video game design.
The list was released in USA Today and the New York Times this week. Fifteen schools made the list, with ten schools ranked and five honorable mentions. In their release, the Princeton Review stated that the list was based on surveys of 150 institutions offering video game design coursework and degrees. Contributing factors included academics, curriculum and faculty credentials, and graduates’ employment and career achievements.
