Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is a university in North West England. Its headquarters and central campus is in the city of Manchester, but there are outlying facilities in the county of Cheshire. It is the third largest university in the United Kingdom in terms of student numbers behind the Open University and its neighbor Manchester University. It is a member of the University Alliance and is classed as a new university. The University Alliance is a group of 23 British universities which focus mainly on business. Students in MMU have got easy access to the city of Manchester and all its famous sights. Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England. In 2009, its population was estimated to be 483,800 making it the seventh-most populous local authority district in England. It is known for its music scene and its sporting connections. Manchester was the host of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and its sports clubs include two Premier League football teams, Manchester City and Manchester United. Manchester is the third-most visited city in the United Kingdom by foreign visitors and the most visited in England outside London.
The University is based at seven campuses, five in Manchester and two at Alsager and Crewe collectively known as MMU Cheshire. The central Manchester campuses form part of the largest higher education campus in the UK and one of the most extensive education centers in Europe.
