Liverpool John Moores University (informally LJMU) is a British ‘modern’ university located in the city of Liverpool, England. The university is named after John Moores and was previously called Liverpool Mechanics’ School of Arts and later Liverpool Polytechnic before gaining university status in 1992, thus becoming Liverpool John Moores University. LJMU is a fantastic place to study. It’s a university rooted in the heart of Liverpool, that’s bursting with energy, creativity and innovation. With world class architecture and more listed buildings than any city outside London, Liverpool was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004. These inspiring surroundings are juxtaposed with Liverpool’s visible investment in an exciting future, as new developments and award winning structures reshape the city’s skyline.

LJMU is located at the centre of an extraordinary city. Liverpool, also known as the ‘World Capital of Pop’, is the birthplace of The Beatles. It has a number of legendary and up and coming artists plus lots of great music venues. Also, did you know that Sex and the City star, Kim Cattrall, who recently received an honorary degree from LJMU, was born in Liverpool?
LJMU connects students with some of the world’s biggest employers. The university’s famous World of Work programme gives students more than just a degree: it connects students to some of the biggest firms in the UK. With the Faculty of Business and Law’s new links with firms in Greater China and Shanghai among others, students have even more opportunities.
The university is a member of the University Alliance, a mission group of British universities established in 2007. It is also a member of the European University Association and the North West Universities Association. At present, LJMU serves more than 24,000 students comprising 20,270 undergraduate students and 4,100 postgraduate students, making it the largest university in Liverpool by student population – as well as the twentieth largest in the UK.
